What is the London Eye?
A 135-metre observation wheel on the South Bank, turning slowly enough that you barely feel it move. Each glass pod holds around 25 people, and a full rotation takes about half an hour. On a clear day you can see roughly 40 kilometres — Westminster, St Paul's, the City towers, and out towards Windsor.
What to expect
- Boarding — the wheel doesn't stop, so you step into a moving pod. It's slow and easy.
- The rotation — roughly 30 minutes for one full turn.
- Inside the pod — enclosed, climate-controlled, with a bench in the middle and room to walk around.
- The views — best on the upward arc and at the top.
Best time to go
- Sunset — the standout. You get the city in daylight, then lit up as you descend.
- Early morning — quietest, shortest queues.
- Avoid weekend afternoons — longest waits.
- Clear days obviously beat grey ones, but London being London, don't hold out for perfection.
Is it worth it? (honest answer)
If it's your first time in London, or you're showing someone the city: yes. The views really are excellent and the pods are comfortable and spacious. If you've done it before, be aware that the experience doesn't vary much — a Thames evening cruise gives you a different perspective for a similar price.
Practical tips
- Book online in advance — it's cheaper than at the door and saves queueing.
- Fast-track tickets cost more but can save a substantial wait at busy times.
- Pods can be crowded — if you want space, avoid peak slots.
- Fully accessible; wheelchair users can board without difficulty.
