What is a tandem skydive?
A tandem skydive is the fastest way for a complete beginner to experience freefall. You're securely harnessed to a qualified instructor who controls every part of the jump — the exit, the freefall, the parachute deployment and the landing. That means you get the full, unforgettable rush of jumping from a plane without needing any training or experience of your own.
What to expect on the day
- Briefing — around 20–30 minutes covering body position and what happens at each stage.
- Kitting up — you're fitted with a harness and paired with your instructor.
- The climb — a plane ride up to altitude, roughly 15–20 minutes.
- Freefall — up to a minute of pure freefall, depending on jump height.
- Canopy ride — a calm 3–5 minute glide with incredible views.
- Landing — your instructor brings you both safely down.
Expect to be at the dropzone for around 3–4 hours in total, as there's usually some waiting for your slot and the right conditions.
Do you need experience?
None at all. That's the entire point of a tandem jump — your instructor is a qualified professional who does all the technical work. Thousands of people do their first tandem skydive every year with zero background in the sport. Read our full guide on tandem skydive requirements →
Weight, age and health requirements
- Age: usually a minimum of 16, with parental consent for under-18s.
- Weight: commonly capped around 15–16 stone, for safety and equipment reasons.
- Health: you'll complete a medical declaration; some conditions may need a doctor's sign-off.
These vary between centres, so always confirm the specific requirements when booking.
Things worth knowing
- Weather matters. Skydives are weather-dependent and can be rescheduled at short notice — build in flexibility.
- Height options. 10,000ft gives around 30 seconds of freefall; 15,000ft gives up to 60 seconds for a higher price.
- Video packages add £60–£130 but capture a moment that goes by very fast.
- Wear comfortable clothes and trainers, and eat a normal meal beforehand.
