What to Wear for Clay Pigeon Shooting
Booked your first clay pigeon shooting session and wondering whether you need tweed and wellies? Good news: you don't. Shooting grounds provide the gun, cartridges and safety gear — all you need to bring is sensible clothing. Here's exactly what to wear, what to avoid, and what's already covered.
The short answer
Comfortable outdoor clothes suited to the weather, layered, with sturdy closed-toe shoes or boots. That's genuinely it. No specialist gear is required for a beginner session.
Clothing
- Layers. You'll be standing outdoors, often for one to two hours. British weather being what it is, layers you can add or remove are your friend.
- A waterproof jacket if rain is likely. Sessions usually go ahead in light rain.
- Something you don't mind getting muddy. Shooting grounds are fields — expect mud, especially in winter.
- Comfortable trousers that let you move freely. Jeans are fine.
- Avoid loose scarves, dangling jewellery or baggy sleeves — anything that could catch on the gun or get in the way.
Footwear (the one thing people get wrong)
This matters more than anything else you wear. Grounds are frequently wet and muddy, and you'll be standing and turning on uneven ground.
- Best: walking boots or wellies
- Fine: sturdy trainers you don't mind ruining
- Avoid: open-toed shoes, sandals, smart shoes, heels
If you turn up in nice white trainers, you will regret it.
What the ground provides
You don't need to buy or bring any of this:
- Shotgun and cartridges
- Clays
- Ear defenders (mandatory — shotguns are loud)
- Safety glasses
- Full instruction from a qualified coach
What else to bring
- A change of shoes for the drive home — muddy boots in a car footwell are miserable.
- Sunglasses on a bright day (though the ground provides safety glasses).
- Cash or card if you fancy extra clays — most people do once they get going.
Do you need to look the part?
Some shooting grounds have a country-sporting atmosphere, and you'll see plenty of Barbour jackets and shooting vests. But for a beginner taster session, nobody expects or cares whether you own any of it. Turn up in what's comfortable and practical, and you'll fit in fine.
One exception: a handful of grounds have a dress code for corporate or private events. If you're attending something formal, check when booking.
