What is stand-up paddleboarding?

You stand on a large, stable board and propel yourself along with a long paddle. In London, that usually means gliding the calm canals and docks — past narrowboats, under bridges, and through parts of the city most people never see from the water. It's peaceful, surprisingly good exercise, and a genuinely different way to spend a couple of hours.

Is it hard?

Easier than it looks. Beginner boards are wide and stable, sessions are on flat water, and instructors typically start you kneeling before you stand up. Most people are up and paddling within about fifteen minutes. You may well fall in once — treat that as part of the experience.

What to expect on the day

The workout you weren't expecting

Paddleboarding looks serene, and it is — but the constant micro-adjustments to stay balanced work your core surprisingly hard. Expect to feel it the next day, particularly in your legs and abs. It's one of the rare activities that's genuinely relaxing and a real workout at the same time.

Frequently asked questions

Is paddleboarding hard for beginners?

Not particularly. Most people are standing and paddling within the first fifteen minutes. Beginner sessions take place on calm, flat water, and instructors start you on your knees before you stand.

Do you need to be able to swim to paddleboard?

Most operators ask that you are reasonably comfortable in water, and you will wear a buoyancy aid throughout. Requirements vary, so check with the provider when booking.

What should you wear for paddleboarding?

Wear something you don't mind getting wet, such as swimwear or sports kit, with a change of clothes for afterwards. In colder months a wetsuit is usually provided or recommended.
